Literacy

Starting from the early days of Nursery School and continuing throughout Pre-Kindergarten, our focus is on daily activities that enhance fine motor skills. Similar to all muscles in the body, hand muscles require strengthening. By developing robust hand muscles, incoming Kindergarten students can better endure the extended writing demands, minimizing fatigue. Although a few worksheets may come home in Pre-Kindergarten, we prioritize a balanced approach, avoiding excessive reliance on worksheets.

At Kordas Korner, we recognize that younger children may find abstract instruction overwhelming. To address this, our curriculum incorporates a variety of engaging methods such as manipulatives, games, songs, and fingerplays. These interactive approaches not only make learning enjoyable but also effectively teach students how to recognize, write, and comprehend letter sounds in a hands-on manner. The 'Handwriting Without Tears' program, which we implement, fosters a positive and supportive learning environment, enabling children to acquire writing and reading skills effortlessly. This approach ensures that students enter Kindergarten with a strong foundation in basic skills.

Our commitment to literacy education extends to the use of 'Wilson Fundations' and 'Reading A-Z' in our Pre-Kindergarten and advanced Pre-Kindergarten classes. 'Wilson Fundations' focuses on phonological/phonemic awareness, phonics, and spelling, while 'Reading A-Z' offers a wealth of high-quality resources at various instruction levels to promote reading proficiency. By incorporating these programs, we ensure that students enter Kindergarten well-prepared with a robust foundation in essential skills.
