Science

Students gather weekly for something new to explore and investigate in science.   These projects include both collaborative group activities and individual investigations. Each activity emphasizes fostering a questioning mindset, encouraging inquiry, and promoting thorough investigation. Students actively explore to find solutions to the questions. Throughout these sessions, they are motivated to question, observe, formulate hypotheses, and conduct experiments to test their ideas.

One delightful science activity involves creating a spring garden. Initially, we engage in a discussion about what to plant and introduce the concept of voting to the children. An election is held to determine the selected plants, and we proceed to establish an indoor garden within the classroom. As the weather warms up, the garden transitions outdoors. This activity not only imparts knowledge about plants and the environment but also encourages students to make healthy choices with fruits and vegetables. We may construct a graph illustrating the students' fruit and vegetable preferences. Once the garden begins to flourish, we document the plant growth using graphs and utilize magnifying glasses to examine the roots. Toward the end, we pick the vegetables for our snack and/or if in abundance we discuss the concept of giving and receiving by donating the harvested vegetables to a local food shelter.

An additional spring science activity involves the transformation of caterpillars into beautiful butterflies. This serves as an enriching learning experience where we engage in daily observations, hypothesis formulation, and maintain a journal. In our journal, students articulate their observations about the caterpillars, documenting their appearance and noting the significant changes each day. Questions about the silky material they produce, the duration of the chrysalis stage, and whether a butterfly qualifies as an insect are among the many intriguing inquiries explored in this hands-on learning journey.
